There was an interesting contrast, on campus, between my last shows of last summer and this first show of the new summer. My last summer shows coincide with the first days of classes in September. Those Thursday nights find the campus alive and kicking with the students out and about in large numbers until well into the wee hours, enjoying life in a raucous manner! Yeah, baby! This Thursday I found the campus, on the last days of classes, in a much quieter mood. Random students or small groups of students sort of sprinkled by the station here and there. No music filled the air. Term papers and final exams had put the kabosh on the usual Thursday night start to their weekend. Maybe some of them were listening to WCNI while studying?
The first show of the summer schedule went off on an African tip.

A little more life on campus tonight, as opposed to last week, as exams have finished and it was mostly graduating seniors still around and looking to live it up. I could hear a band or dj playing elsewhere inside the student center. Boom shacka lacka! Last chance to dance! Their parents will be coming in tomorrow, go to town tonight. Later during my show, I went out onto the loading dock and found a couple seniors hanging out there, chatting away. They said they were enjoying the music on our little loading dock speaker while taking in some fresh night air  On with the show:

I was thinking about Chip Miller's former jazz show, "Jazz and Cocktails". For about 10 years (?) he produced, IMO, the finest jazz listening ever to be beamed out by WCNI. From solid mainstream to ethereal avant-garde with stops all along the jazz spectrum, he gave us music to chew on. It's been, I think, around 10 years since he's done a show. I dug up one of his humorous show ID's from an old cassette tape of mine (1990-ish) and played it over the air for old times sake. I also mixed in some of the jazz that he enjoyed playing on his show into this show. Chip, here's to your health and good fortune. Salut!
P.S. - has anyone ever seen Chip Miller and Slim Cockroach together in the same room? Hmmmmm.

In 1938 jazz first came to Carnegie Hall with a performance by the Benny Goodman Big Band. And what a performance it was. Such precision combined with so much energy! The show must have torn the house down. The concert was recorded (pre tape) directly onto acetate platters. Those platters were stored away until 1950 when they were mastered into 78s and later LPs.
The sound quality of the acetate masters is well below the quality of what we have become accustomed to today. They have that effect of skewing the timbre and adding surface noise, things that we instantly recognize when we listen to recorded music from the pre-WWII era . Since the advent of digital recording technology, there have been several attempts to ‘clean up’ the sound from those acetates. You can find versions of this concert that have had the surface noise removed … but the jury is out as to whether this is a good thing or not . There is always some collateral damage to the surrounding music when noise cancellation is inserted. To some folks ears, the noise takes away too much from the listening enjoyment, so its disappearance is worth the trade off. Others feel that they would rather get the full sound captured on the acetates and treat the associated noise as part of the patina of age.
Columbia/Sony found some aluminum sub-master disks that had been cut directly from the acetate masters. They digitally reproduced the sound from those aluminum sub-masters without any digital trickery. They released that version in 1999, so look for it if you want to get as close to the sound and ambiance as is possible. Otherwise, look for one of the other, cleaner sounding, versions as long as you’re not too fussy of an audiophile.
The version that I played on this show is an old LP copy from our station library. I couldn’t hear the noise from the acetates because our copy of this concert has been handled and spun many, many times, so the LP’s surface noise really dominated the proceedings. That said, I think this concert kicks patootie and no amount of sonic degradation can stop its ability to thrill.
