Phil-ing In : Friday Feb. 10, Noon-3:00  Reply with quote

Well, it's been some time since I've been on the air at lunch time. Usually, I'm shuffling around the bucolic Uncle Phil hacienda with a cup o' joe and a newspaper in my hands at noon ... me being a night owl and all that. The Limey needed a sub for his noon show though, so I volunteered to take one for the team Smile Damn, it takes me awhile to get my stuff together in the morning but once the coffee kicked in and the wheels of steel started to spin I got in the game and was having fun.

The show began and ended with two very different kinds of music, yet both songs featured the human voice as the main instrument.

'We' opened with Sheila Chandra performing a piece from her album, 'Quiet"

This piece is very structured, cerebral and polished to a high sheen. It takes one to a quiet, delicate place. The show ended with Sugar Minott toasting, inna DJ stylee.

This time the production is rough and raw (live?) and the vocals are spur of the moment off-the-cuff. The place that it takes you to is one with a lot of movement and power.

Both Chandra's and Minott's vocals are, in effect, just 'sounds' to our ears, not 'words' (unless you can cut your way through Minott's heavy Jamaican patois). Basically, the meaning of the vocals are not the point of the music. I like it like that. We can make the music into anything that we may imagine.

Brother man,

Manu wants me to let you know that he says "Hi" and he "digs your stuff". You know, it's not unusual for him to be up at 3 AM (Cameroon time), knocking back a tall, frosty Rhino-ade while listening to WCNI's "Spin Zone" through his dial-up modem (the buffering adds a 1'st world, post-modern, Eno-esque tension that Idea he wants to employ on his next studio production). He swears that he heard you play his old hit, Soul Makossa, but the internet connection suddenly went down during that oh so funky drum intro, so he can't be sure if that was for real or it was just the Rhino-ade doing the talking.

Heyyyy soul makoosa............ynot domo
MOODOK! mmmmm hmmmm
